We most often clean water-to-water plate heat exchangers chemically, using circulation. However, when there is a blockage between the plates, a deposit that is difficult to dissolve, a large quantity of corrosion flakes, or plastic debris from cooling-tower fill, it is necessary to disassemble the heat exchanger and clean each plate individually.
With higher-quality heat exchangers, this can be done without replacing the rubber gaskets, i.e. the exchanger can be resealed using the existing gaskets.
